Corfu
or Kerkyra as it otherwise known is the northernmost, second largest
of the Ionion Islands and is located off the West coast of Greece
in the Ionion Sea.
Corfu is approximately 40 miles long by 20 miles at its widest point.
Known as the Emerald Isle, Corfu is characterised by its green,
lush vegetation, which it gets from its hot and dry summers combined
with lots of winter rain. The island is densely covered in Olive
groves and Cypress trees.
The islands capital, Corfu Town has
two parts, the Old and the New Town. In the Old Town there is a
16th century fortress overlooking the town, and a maze of cobbled
streets and squares to be explored. There is a strong Venetian influence
in the old Town, as the Venetians ruled the island for over four
centuries.
The New Town, in contrast, is a cosmopolitan area with many shops
selling an array of local handicrafts including gold, leather, olive
wood objects, ceramics and handmade needlework.
There are many contrasting holiday resorts on the island, some of
the most popular include:-
North Coast
Kassiopi – On
the North East Coast, once a small fishing village, now a lively
resort.
Sidari – On
the North West Coast, lively and perfect for families, couples and
groups.
South Coast
Kavos- On the southern
tip of the island, this is the party destination, popular with young
people.
West Coast
Agios Georgios –
A small traditional resort on the Southern West coast, next to Lake
Korission, perfect for a relaxing, quiet holiday.
Glyfada – A
resort famous for its stunning, sandy beach. Rumoured to be the
best beach in Corfu.
Paleokastritsa –
Corfu’s most treasured beauty spot. A monastery is located
here on the headland. The resort is located 16 miles north of Corfu
town.
East Coast
Gouvia – One
of the largest, livelier resorts, a short distance from Corfu Town,
home to the marina.
Dassia – A large
resort with a long stretch of pebble and shingle beach, with a good
selection of water sports on offer.
Ipsos – Set
against the back drop of the hills of the North East of the island,
Ipsos is one of the liviest resorts in Corfu.
Corfu
is a large diverse island with many resorts appealing to many types
of holiday makers. There is something for everyone on this popular
island.
